The 10.10 installer surely has a bug. I tried running it several times on my PC which also has XP installed. I selected "Install alongside another OS", went through the install then it failed at the bootloader installation. I tried to manually partition the drive too - failed at the same place. Then I downloaded 10.04 and tried that install and it worked no problem at all.
