I am in the process of installing Ubuntu for the first time. I downloaded .ISO files for both 10.10 and 10.4.
The system on which Ubuntu is to be installed exceeds hardware minimums specified: Dual-Core ES3200, 1Gb DDR2, WD 500Gb and DVD-R (both SATA). Video is Intel GMA3000 onboard.
The system was previously running XP with SP3. I formatted the hard drive (NTFS) and booted system from the Ubuntu 10.10 installation CD. The Ubuntu splash screen came up with the 5 dots flickering across the screen and the installation went no further.
After about 15 minutes it was clear that something was wrong. I started over, this time with Ubuntu 10.4. The result was the same.
I am new to Linux, therefore I may be missing something quite obvious. If I need to do the install from a command-line, a link to a good tutorial would be helpful. I'm just not sure what to do next. Any guidance you can provide would be graciously accepted.
