Hi, I am using a desktop Ubuntu, but I am interested in using Unity, how can I set it as default desktop environment? Would it be fine without GNOME?? If so, please instruct me on how to remove it.

Unity would be fine without Gnome. Have you installed Unity?
To be honest, you will be absolutely fine leaving it where it is, (probably better off, as gnome is a lot more then just the desktop. E.g. you power manager applet, volume controls etc (which mind you are probably used by Unity anyway)).

So basically, you can just keep Gnome but just boot into unity by default.

To do so, select "Ubuntu Netbook Edition" (Or to that effect) at the login screen. You have to select your username first, then the selection is at the bottom.

Well I did find I need to select Unity and all, which is why I asked how to make it default. I'm on desktop, so power management and sound volumes are pretty much never changed...
