System was running 9.10 just fine.
I *just* decided to upgrade to 10.04.1.

bad idea to mess w/ a working system. :(

Anyway my system won't go past the "ubuntu" splash screen with the five dots. The dots just keep scrolling from white to red over and over.

I can ssh into the box.
Top shows "plymouthd" is running, about 5% CPU and stuck.

Can someone help me get my PC back?
thanks!

me too - except mine was a clean install to the whole HDD. I did select the "download updates" and "3rd party" options the first time, am doing a re-install now without the "download updates" option.

LiveCD worked fine, FWIW.

What graphics card do you have installed?

for the record, the reinstall without updates worked. I have an nVidia card and doing it this way allowed me to manually enable the proprietary drivers and that seemed to go fine.

http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1598281 looked similar to the OP's situation and also relates to graphics driver issues.
