One year ago I installed Ubuntu 9.10 on my Fujitsu-Siemens Stylistic ST5022. I had to declare "nomodeset" in GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX to use the i810/i915 accelerated graphics (Xv, xrandr, and such things).

Now I made a fresh install of Ubuntu 10.10: it was flawless, but Xorg always starts in VESA/fbdev mode. Using that NOMODESET trick did not help.

Some info about my system:

- Excerpts from xorg log:

X.Org X Server 1.9.0
[ 23.536] (--) PCI:*(0:0:2:0) 8086:3582:10cf:1215 rev 2, Mem @ 0xd8000000/134217728, 0xd0000000/524288, I/O @ 0x00001800/8
[ 23.536] (--) PCI: (0:0:2:1) 8086:3582:10cf:1215 rev 2, Mem @ 0xe0000000/134217728, 0xd0080000/524288

[ 23.609] (==) Matched vesa as autoconfigured driver 0
[ 23.609] (==) Matched fbdev as autoconfigured driver 1
[ 23.609] (==) Assigned the driver to the xf86ConfigLayout
[ 23.609] (II) LoadModule: "vesa"

- In Synaptic I see:
- xserver-xorg-video-all is installed
- xserver-xorg-video-intel is installed
- xserver-xorg-video-fbdev is also installed

I tried to manually uninstall xserver-xorg-video-fbdev but at next boot Xorg did not start.

Any clues?
