What about those of us who don't want to go gnome3 (gnome-shell)? Will there be an option to stay with gnome2, or will we have to look elsewhere?

Pretty sure GNOME 3 will not come default, since it's scheduled for release in April. Canonical shouldn't be switching filesystems again in my view and it's time for them to keep a stable base for their OEM adoption.

I thought gnome is a shell, don't we (users) get to choose the file system when installing the OS?

I don't think GNOME3 will be in Ubuntu Narwhal. It's way too early.

We don't really know yet, but this will all be sorted out at UDS (http://uds.ubuntu.com/) next week :)
Blueprints proposed for discussion (via 50-minute sessions spread across five days) are up at https://launchpad.net/sprints/uds-n
There are some doubts about Gnome Shell (the big replacement for the panels, notification system and desktop), but Gnome 3 should definitely be there with all its other wonderful changes like a redesigned control center / system preferences interface, Yelp 3 (which actually helps people instead of making problems, and does it well), further refined Folks in Empathy (metacontacts), and Gtk3 / GApplication and all the neat things that stuff brings.

With GNOME 3, it'd be Ubuntu's next evolutionary stage.

I dream of a Ubuntu version that features BTRFS and fully integrates its snapshot feature into Nautilus (like OpenSolaris does). That would be awesome.

I hope, the Canonical engineers can adept the OpenSolaris patch for nautilus to work on BTRFS.
