problems with installing 10.10

hey guys this is my first time trying to use ubuntu

ive put a new hdd into my old comp to try it out, im using a usb to try and install.

when i install i get writing scrolling down the screen then it flicks to a black screen and just stays there.

am i doing it wrong? or is there a simple fix if so please tell me

Hit enter at the screen with with a man in circle and a keyboard. Keep hitting until you see a menu. Now press F6 and select nomodeset and continue booting. Can you see the desktop now?

yer i did that and selected run from usb and i ended up with the same blank screen
