Hello,

I just downloaded a tar.gz file from art.gnome.org and it's a login theme. I have tried to find out how to install it to no prevail. I tried going under System>Administration>Login Screen which I read in another forum was the way to do it, but I found no option to change the screen. If you told me exactly what I could do in the terminal I could figure it out, you'd have to speak beginners talk to me though... I haven't been using Linux for very long, love it though. I'm learning quite a lot.

Thanks,
Allen

What you've downloaded is probably a GDM login theme. Ubuntu has been using GDM2 for the past couple releases, so that theme will not be usable. Although GDM2 can be customized a bit, it currently isn't as theme-able as the old GDM.

So I'm guessing GDM2 can't use login themes yet?

you can not install a Real login theme actually in 10.04 and 10.10.
The word Real, I mean the wallpaper, the layout, the logo and so on.

Using GDM2 can not modify the login screen layout too. but it can modify the wallpaper and the logo.

You can just use GDM2 or refer to this blog to achieve it.
