Desktop Effects gone after reboot [10.10]

I did a Dist-upgrade from 10.04 to 10.10 and now I have to reenable the desktop effects after every reboot.
I don't know why my system doesn't keep the desktop effects, that was no problem before the upgrade to 10.10.

I ran a Geforce 6600 with the 260.19.06 nvidia driver from the ubuntu repository.

I have the same problem, also after updating to 10.10.

The icons on my desktop are ordering themselves, too, even though I didn't set them to be ordered automatically. So no matter how I group the icons together, just marking one and e.g. pressing CTRL-C will have them fly to the upper left corner in aphabetical order again.

Any help is appreciated.

Did you try removing and reinstalling the drivers? You'll need to reboot in between.
