Changing panel color independent of theme

does anyone know how to change the panel colors independent of theme? I like the theme I am on, but I want to lighten up my panel colors a little to contrast more with my background.

If you are wondering, I tried gnome-color-chooser and I cannot figure out how to change every panels color with that in 10.10; just parts of panels.

Just right click the panel, choose properties > appearance and select solid colour. Then you can choose a colour you like.

I do that, but it only changes part of the panel, which leaves me with a part that is colored differently from the rest, and the rest will not change colors...
