I had dual boot (windows XP and 10.4). I upgraded to ubuntu 10.10. Post upgrade I got a grub rescue prompt.

After that I followed the grub recovery procedure.

https://help.ubuntu.com/community/RecoveringUbuntuAfterInstallingWindows

I did not get any errors during the procedure.

However post reboot I get nothing. just a black screen..not disc activity either.

Did you reinstall grub2 to the MBR? Did you use the full chroot method if the short method did not work?

Download this and run it.

You do show grub2 installed in sda & sdb, have you tried booting both? One may work where the other does not.

You may not have to uninstall old grub but this full chroot reinstall of grub2 to the MBR usually works:

chroot & grub uninstall & reinstall
