View Full Version : [all variants] VPN setup

I'm looking for some general advice/suggestions, any of which will be gratefully received.

I currently use a commercial VPN provider when I'm overseas in order to access skype etc, however obviously I pay for that and it also routes everything via a third continent.

I have an old ITX box lying around which I'd like to look at using in order to set up my own VPN so that I can use my broadband connection back home (I'm not looking at connecting to a network at home).

Is this feasible for a networking novice, and will I be able to get a reliable and secure VPN this way? It won't be crucial that it runs flawlessly 24/7 as I will have a backup commercial VPN, but I would want to be able to use it more times than I don't. I also need to think about what distro will best suit the slow/old ITX box.

The extent of the support I'd have back home would be asking somebody to recycle the power on the front of the ITX box!

Many thanks!
