View Full Version : [ubuntu] 10.10 Development branch still installed?

I upgraded to 10.10 Development branch around September 20, 2010 to solve a wireless problem Karmic couldn't fix. 10.10 has a few daemons that wouldn't run ( smbd, vino ) but for the most part it solved the problems I was having...

Now October 10, 2010 has come and past, and Maverick is released. I ran update-manager on October 11, and a lot of packages were upgraded, but there was nothing said about upgrading to Maverick final. I think I may still be using the Maverick Development branch... How can I check?

Something that is not very encouraging, is that when I ssh into localhost, I get this..

Linux mr-slate 2.6.35-22-generic #34-Ubuntu SMP Sun Oct 10 09:26:05 UTC 2010 x86_64 GNU/Linux

It seems like there are two welcome messages, one for regular maverick, showing 0 packages to upgrade, and 1 for development branch showing 36 packages to upgrade.

When I go into update-manager and click 'check' it says the are no packages to upgrade. I tried running 'update-manager -d' but still nothing to upgrade.

How can I solve this?

What does lsb_release -a tell you?
Check you software sources (reposities in synaptic, files in /etc/apt/sources.list and /etc/apt/sources.list.d/) to see if you have multiple distributions worth of repositories enabled.

Did you do any "Partial" updates or use any ppa's or other things not in mainstream packages?

Some people noticed that their /etc/motd was not updated. I originally installed 10.10 beta, did accidentally do a Partial update which seemed to be proper (removed packages replaced by recommended changes), updated to RC, and after other updates during that its /etc/lsb_release stopped showing Development Branch (or whatever) days before 10/10/2010. My motd currently shows:

Linux efflandt-desktop 2.6.35-22-generic #34-Ubuntu SMP Sun Oct 10 09:26:05 UTC 2010 x86_64 GNU/Linux
Ubuntu 10.10

Welcome to Ubuntu!
* Documentation: https://help.ubuntu.com/

5 packages can be updated.
0 updates are security updates.PS: I just set up sshd and connecting by ssh shows similar to what I pasted above except instead of packages it showed last login Sept 30 (1st ssh login today, so maybe that was when I installed beta) and that it created an .Xauthority file.

PPS: Just ran across something else to check, the contents of /etc/update-motd.d which generates motd (to show proper kernel, etc).

To me lsb_release -a and /etc/apt/sources.list seem to look ok. This box has already gone from Lucid to Karmic to Maverick, when it was lucid, I installed some external sources for bleeding edge nvidia and mythtv packages, but after upgrading to Maverick they have just been disabled, so I dont think it would cause any problem. In the /etc/update-mot.d folder, the only thing that looks suspicious is the 91-release-upgrade script, I'm not sure what that is doing.

Again here is my output from an ssh login, it looks like I am running 2 distributions or something? Saying one has 20 updates, and the other has 36 updates:

Have you looked to see if you have /etc/motd.tail? Try removing that.

Wow, thanks! That file contained:

I just deleted it, and now the text is gone.. I guess during the upgrade it wasn't removed or regenerated... Thanks for your help!
