Upgrade 10.04-->10.10 with pre-release upgrades activated?

Hi everyone,

I'm trying to upgrade from Kubuntu 10.04 x86_64 to 10.10, but I'm getting the following error message:

Could not calculate the upgrade

An unresolvable problem occurred while calculating the upgrade:
E:Error, pkgProblemResolver::Resolve generated breaks, this may be
caused by held packages.

This can be caused by:
* Upgrading to a pre-release version of Ubuntu
* Running the current pre-release version of Ubuntu
* Unofficial software packages not provided by Ubuntu

If none of this applies, then please report this bug against the
'update-manager' package and include the files in
/var/log/dist-upgrade/ in the bug report.


Restoring original system state

I have indeed installed pre-release and backport packages, as well as some packages of my own (some that I made from source with "checkinstall"). Is there a way to see which packages are causing trouble so I can uninstall them manually or something?

Is there a way to do a complete clean install but keep home, if they are NOT on separate partitions?

I'm not sure how this is helpful. As I said before, I have installed pre-releases and backports, as well as extra packages.

Uninstall your graphics drivers (if any), disable the third party repositories, clean the apt-get cache and again try dist-upgrade.


sudo apt-get clean

If still unsuccessful, please post the output of


cat /var/log/dist-upgrade/apt.log | grep broken
