VGA=789 is depreciated

Just prior to automatically updating from 10.4 to 10.10, I received the above error message during boot. It also said: GFXPAYLOAD=800x60x24, 800x600 before linux command instead.
This error continued in v 10.10.

What's going on here and how can it be fixed?
