Ok so I had Ubuntu 10.04 on my HP laptop, and was in the process of upgrading to 10.10. However I dillydaddled while installing and checked back once an hour. Last time I checked, the laptop showed that it was configuring mscompress, with 25 mins remaining. This lasted for 6 hours upon which I discovered that the screen had frozen and the laptop was unresponsive. Therefore I forced a power down, and then started it back up, selected the first kernel on the GRUB menu, and it said the kernel couldn't be initialized. So now I'm running the laptop from a previous kernel and am attempting to re-establish the system back to what it was. Any ideas for preventing this from happening again?

UPDATE:
Ok so having failed at upgrading up from a previous kernel, I've proceeded to transfer all essential files to an external drive, have downloaded the 10.10 ISO, and will do a complete re-install on the laptop. Hoping that will work since I don't feel like spending the whole day fixing up my laptop.
