Could I please have some advice as to what to do.

The upgrade from 10.04 to 10.10 stopped 5 mins from the end. It was at the point where the terminal said:

Starting disk temp monitoring daemon hddtemp:

I have my home directory on a different partition to the rest of the operating system.

I have not rebooted the system. I exited from the upgrade and was able to get into firefox to send this message.

I tried a partial upgrade via the update manager. This is the error message:

Unable to get exclusive lock

This usually means that another package management application (like apt-get or aptitude) already running. Please close that application first.

These are the running processes from Htop. Which ones should I kill to release the lock

Htop does not show apt-get or aptitude running. How do I clear the exclusive lock?

I tried

sudo dpkg --configure -a

The response is Status database is locked by another process.

Could someone please comment on how to remove the exclusive lock.
I do not want to reboot until the upgrade is fully repaired.

This solved it:

sudo fuser -vki /var/lib/dpkg/lock
