Login fails from LoginScreen

Hi,

After upgrade, I now can not login in at the LoginScreen. I can login through recovery and then normal login. After startx, everything looks happy, BUT I can never login through the Login Screen. I return immediately to the LoginScreen.

I tried setting no password needed for login, and that only makes the return to the LoginScreen faster as there is no authentication needed.
Does anyone else see this and how can I debug this problem?

Hello. I too am having similar problems. I'm a new comer to Ubuntu and just did a clean install of Ubuntu 10.10 (alternate) for Intel PCs over my Windows XP installation. All went fine and after I enter the password on my user profile either of two things happens: the taskbar appears on the top of the screen for a brief second, screen blanks out and returns to the login screen. Or I'm left with just the cursor and the background wallpaper with no taskbar. Any ideas appreciated.
