Greetings all,

I will be spending roughly 5 hours on a bus tomorrow and I need to keep myself occupied for that time...

So, I thought I would take my netbook along (thats why I got the thing in the first place) but I don't currently have anything to put on it to watch...

So any suggestions on some legal-to-download "things" I could grab from the net? (I have no clue to the legality of Anime anymore, have looked at a few things I could find searching for Creative Commons on Google, not much looked promising)...

Any documentaries or films would be great... what are your favorite ones (if any)...

As long as it is free and legal for me to download and watch I would like to hear of it...

EDIT: If possible not too old... If its black and white then it is too old by about 50 years, kthxbai ;)

Cheers
Neil

Hello, if you like old films etc, try The Internet Archive.

Not much but if you haven't already seen the 15 minutes 3d animation movie Sintel at http://www.sintel.org/ That is certainly a small awesome movie :)

Other than that, you could download some videos from youtube, with one of the many Firefox addons for the purpose.

And I'm pretty sure that unlicensed anime with fan-subs are legal to download too.

Had a look, pretty interesting site... however, I wasn't even able to finish the original Tron a few nights ago so I seriously doubt I would survive any of those movies :D

It seems I was wrong  I just searched a bit and it seems to in fact not be totally legal to download unlicensed anime ;)
Crunchyroll.com is legal though, but you need internet :P

Good Copy Bad Copy (http://www.goodcopybadcopy.net/).

Was looking at this earlier, but the link on thepiratebay isn't working and doing a search gives a couple of hits with 1 seeder and nothing else :(

... Thanks for the effort... but I won't make a movie like this before committing horrible crimes to my own body... :D

I have watched a few documentaries about Hackers (Kevin Mitnick story etc.) and a number of them where free to download and distribute... surely there must be something out there decent to watch (which hasn't been released because of its horrible age...)

Much of the stuff that streams in Flash video can be downloaded and saved as .flv files and then viewed later, of course. Add-ons to Firefox such as Video Downloadhelper can do this, or often you can just save the .flv file from the /tmp folder as it downloads.

If it is streamable and savable, it is not generally illegal to save it and watch it when you are not connected to the Internet. (You may not have the rights to redistribute it, though, which is an entirely different concern.)

I find that if a site doesn't give you the option to download a file, but only stream it they don't want you to download it (One of the reasons Youtube is able to do what it does is because the laws about streaming audio/visuals are much different than those about making content available for download...

Tried it... but downloading seems troublesome (it just wants to stream it seems)... but then again, technology news from 2004 isn't of much help now... maybe a few laughs could be had but I doubt to many...

Cheers and thanks for the help guys, it is appreciated...

... just a slight update ;)

Got "Good Copy, Bad Copy" via a torrent (well, going to be getting hopefully, cued at the moment...

Also got "RiP: A Remix Manifesto"... this looks really interesting...

(Downloaded Star Wreck - The Pirkkining... Pity 99% of the puns have lost there power due to it being in Dutch... or was that Finnish... doesn't matter, I don't like to read what I watch (thats why fan subbed anime was such a pain :D)

edit:

Here are some more things I have stumbled upon which some of you guys might find interesting...

Quantum Physics made Relatively Simple (http://bethe.cornell.edu/)
Structure and Interpretation of Computer Programs (http://groups.csail.mit.edu/mac/classes/6.001/abelson-sussman-lectures/)

Hmmm... maybe I should edit my OP and start adding some of the goodies out there, make some sort of a must see master list...

TRIPLE POST! (Well it has been 23 hours since my last one... thats technically a day, right?)

So... finally went on my little bus trip, two and a half hours to and two and a half hours back...

...just to find half an hour into the journey that I had brought enough digital media to keep me going...

...I had however forgotten to install the "restricted-extras" I always do first thing after a re-install and thus had no codecs available to watch the videos...

...this made me sad...

BUT then I watched Scott Pilgrim vs the World and I was all

(Also watched Legends of the Guardians in 3D right after that... movie doubles FTW!)

/rant /thread /Will be starting a new thread to try and get as many good sites for good free media and update that with some of the info from this thread too... Cheers to all that partook, really appreciated!

Nah, there are enough things in this world that are true and weird to go look for half-truths ;) (however, if you have a link to sources of videos like this that which fit the description of free to share etc. please let me know...)

I know this is late, but you said you wanted to keep a list for others to look over, so I'll add my two cents.

In a similar vein to "Good Copy Bad Copy" there is "Patent Absurdity" (http://patentabsurdity.com/).
