View Full Version : [ubuntu] Ubuntu 10.10 Boot loader Issue

I posted in another thread, but I thought I'd make my own after the suggestion from some of the other posters.

I do a fresh install of Ubuntu 10.10 from CD and USB. I've tried both, but no matter the installation media I get an error and the grub rescue prompt shows up.

It looks like:

error: no such partition
grub rescue>

When I run ls it only shows (hd0) and (hd0, msdos1) no other partitions.

I've attached my Results.txt from http://bootinfoscript.sourceforge.net/ so that someone may hopefully debug the problem.

Can you provide more details about what you are trying to do exactly with number of hard disks you have and partition information etc. It looks like you already have windows and trying to install Ubuntu with dual boot.

Grub Rescue Prompt Megathread - drs305
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1594052

You have already posted the results.txt (although having it in codes tags makes it easier for us to read it). The install looks normal to me.

drs305 suggests reinstalling grub. I would just do the simple reinstall first and then if that does not work follow the full chroot reinstall that often works when the first short version does not.

Install MBR from LiveCD, Ubuntu install on sda5 and want grub2 in drive sda's MBR:
Find linux partition, change sda5 if not correct, and/or even sda if sdb wanted:
sudo fdisk -l
sudo mount /dev/sda5 /mnt
sudo grub-install --root-directory=/mnt/ /dev/sda
If that returns any errors run:
sudo grub-install --recheck --root-directory=/mnt/ /dev/sda

If this does not work then try the full chroot as discussed in the Megathread.

Yes, I'm trying to dual boot with Vista.

I've done both the reinstall and the chroot reinstall and I still get no love from grub. Grub installs just fine, but when I reboot I get the error message I mentioned above.

Lets get the script posted it is easier to read. I'm sure it might be important to at least identify if this script was run after the last grub install tries.

Grub rescue is supposed to allow you to manually boot if you know partition.

Instructions in link above.

set root=(hd0,5)
linux /vmlinuz root=/dev/sda5 ro
initrd /initrd.img
boot
