Upgrade -> frozen now HELP

Hi -
Upgraded today from 10.04 - now the boot screen lights the 5 dots from left to right and then stops. Nothing after - any thoughts on how to discover what is frozen?

I've had a similar experience trying to boot from a live CD, took ages to even get to a splash screen then froze. Nobody here at all helpful and, judging by numerous other posts on similar themes, I'd guess that 10.10 is buggy as hell and nobody's figured out the causes yet. Probably best to forget about it for a month or two, or perhaps a release or two, there are a few things in 10.10 that would be nice to have but nothing I can't live without until it's been made stable.
