I'm interested in a Local Ubuntu Users Group for Chicago.
My initial purpose of the group is local support and distribution of Ubuntu CD's

I'm not looking to make this a weekly meeting type event but more of an online group that will help further Ubuntu's reach but like anything it can grow into whatever it needs to.

[URL="https://wiki.ubuntu.com/ChicagoTeam"]

post in the Wiki and email me so we can create an email dist. list.

I've found a number of Linux groups and have dropped in on one meeting. but I haven't found a Ubuntu specific group, nor was one listed in the Local groups WIKI. So I though I'd jump on it........ Anyway ](*,).

Hey,

I'd be more than willing to help out. I wanted to get something like this going a while back but time was an issue. I've got http://ubuntuchicago.org/ (nothing but a default install). I'll gladly throw mediawiki up there.

I'd like to get to the point of finding people for regular meetings, hackfests, etc.

Glad to hear about all the interest
Sign the Wiki with your email and we'll see if we can get a list rolling.

What are some other idea's for the groups focus....
My goal was to spread the word.
Any other agenda items should be discussed in this thread and posted to the wiki.

Is anyone Graphicaly inclined? An Chi-buntu icon would be cool.

I've had a few folks email with interest. That's great but let's get a list going in the Wiki.... Also if anyone knows Linux Users Groups in the area make a plan to crash a meeting and drop off some Ubuntu CDs. The last (and only) Linux group I went to had a large showing and nobody used Ubuntu. I busted out a lap top and had a bunch really interested. So try to pass the word.

That could work, If we keep it on a modern feel that it would look good on a T-shirt.

Are there any other Chicago sites that would be good??????? I'm coming up empty, that's why I'm not in marketing.

Has anyone in Chicago ever gone to a release party of any kind?
I've been to a user group meeting (coffie house stlye event)

What kind of Party format is right for a release party??? I'm down for one but these things can be a bit wierd if it's like three people.

I think we need to get the Release date and see if anything else is coming up in the City. Then we can get a idea together. (it'll also give those of us time with wives to explain a release party.....)

I hope it's not in August (I'm going to Africa)

Has anyone seen the release date for Dapper, I keep searching and I think I'm skipping over it....

Hey guys, I made some updates to the ChicagoTeam Wiki (https://wiki.ubuntu.com/ChicagoTeam). I kept everything that was there, just applied a little of the DocTeam styling to it, and added a suggestion box. so lets come up with some things and get this rolling. UbuntuMarketing needs us in Chicago and this would be great.

Greenworm, I fired you an email with some info. Thanks!!!

greenwom
June 15th, 2006, 03:15 PM
nixternal, Thanks for the work. I've been a bit slow on input due to a major career change (I'm leaving the Military after 9 years).

My initial goal was to spread the word and help Market Ubuntu and I think every one is on board with that as a first priority in a vision statement.

I'm still working on an Icon idea give us some identity (time is still crunched)
So Idea's for this also need to keep flowing in.

So the big question is how do we Market Ubuntu to Chicago????
I'd like to start maybe with a cool chicago.craigslist.org ad. Maybe with a Link to Ubuntu.com. Besides the Nelson Mandela Video are there any other Ubuntu ads we could link and us with it???

Are there any other word-of-mouth type marketing ideas?? The Chicago LUGs I think are a waste of time. Most of these guys are BSD, RED HAT guys that are afraid to change and Ubuntu is to different for them.

So how else can spread the word???

nixternal
June 15th, 2006, 04:34 PM
This is our #1 goal (https://launchpad.net/distros/ubuntu/+bug/1). The following can help us out with the marketing aspect and the things needed in the Ubuntu community.

MarketingTeam (https://wiki.ubuntu.com/MarketingTeam)
DIYMarketing (https://wiki.ubuntu.com/DIYMarketing)
UbuntuAtConferences (https://wiki.ubuntu.com/UbuntuAtConferences)
PastUbuntuPresentations (https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Presentations)
LoCoTeamList (https://wiki.ubuntu.com/LoCoTeamList)

If I come up with any more I will post them, but that is a decent start so far. There are computer shows that come to the Chicago land are quite frequently, and that would be a great opportunity. I live out by College of Dupage, and they have a decent show every 2 months and I have noticed that Uniform is out there giving Linux conferences. What I don't appreciate is the fact they give information about opensource and the free world, yet they charge out the wazoo. It doesn't have to happen like tomorrow, but a small booth or something at the show, which is only like $50 now, where we can have signs and what not, hand out literature and cd's, and I am possibly going to build a couple of systems in the future with Ubuntu/Kubuntu, modded, and could possibly use those to raffle maybe.

Like you, I did an 8 year stint in the Navy, and got off active duty in 98, and spent 2 years in the reserves. It takes some adjusting. If possible, it would be nice to have an IRC room where can definately brainstorm, that is if you can do that. If not, my contacts are listed everywhere for other chat protocols.

Hey, I'm from Des Plaines, and live about 5 mins from O'Hare. Just loaded up Ubuntu 6.06 this week. I've had great success with running Quake 4 and UT2004 on it. I do alot of gaming and host a LAN party about once a month in Des Plaines (http://www.minilanclub.com). I'd like to expand my use of Ubuntu to Video Editing and Conversion, as well as web design. Is there any time that people are planning to get togeather to discuss what they do on Ubuntu and what lil tricks and tips they have to share with others... I know this could be done on the fourms but its always nice to meet people face to face.

Many people have expressed a desire to meet so you may have some takers here for an organzied sub event...

Average Age: Anywhere from 18-45 I would say a good average would be 27.
Average Attendance: 15 (We have room for 25.)
Games Played: Quake 4, UT2004, HL2Mods, F.E.A.R., BF2 (Mostly FPS), we also will give most any game a try as long as its fun.
BYOC: Yes
BYOB: Optional

If your in the area and like to game come check it out. If your in the area and don't like to game, come check it out anyways because its a good time, and a good place to talk shop. Although we try to get everyone involved in every game. We discourage MMORPG play at the LAN, as it defeats the purpose of playing with other around you. I run a FULL Gigabit Network so file transfers are fast and low ping is king. On my site http://www.minilanclub.com I say the party is from Noon-4am, but you can come and go as you please, and if people want to stay longer thats cool too. I hope this information has been helpful. Any other question feel free to ask away.

HERE (http://home.comcast.net/~nixternal/images/misc/chicago/) are a few images a couple of the Chicago guys have been messing around with in the #ubuntu-chicago IRC channel on freenode.net. There are quite a few people on freenode that are from the Chicago land area and could possibly be interested in having a Chicago Ubuntu LoCo. Come check out the IRC channel, as we are always in there camping out, waiting to do some work.

We can brainstorm very easily in the irc channel which is nice. Plus on IRC there are many Ubuntu channels in which to help provide support to those with issues, the new guys, or people switching from Windows or Mac over to Linux. Any and all help is greatly appreciated.

If you look around the wiki and take a look at the LoCoTeamList (https://wiki.ubuntu.com/LoCoTeamList), you will notice there are a lot of well organized teams. Those teams took some time to create and get going, but they have been very successfull in the whole "Spreading Ubuntu" campaign. Chicago needs to help out, so this is the call.

Greenwom started this badboy, and from my understanding he is pretty busy right now taking care of his career change. Let's step up and start brainstorming and working together, so when he can participate 100% we can have a good base to present him.

Thanks everyone!!! And I will see you at the Taste next week!!!

Hey Chicagoans!!!

Just wanted to let everyone know that I have been working with Ubuntu members in the community on making Ubuntu Chicago happen. Just so you all know, here are a couple of items on my agenda, which would be great if you all could help:

1. Get the Ubuntu Chicago LoCo Team off the ground
2. Been working to get a Mailing List setup for Ubuntu Chicago via the Ubuntu Mailer
3. Once the members start showing up, get space on an Ubuntu sponsored server for a web site, wiki, and forums
4. Get a greater community online via irc (irc.freenode.net #ubuntu-chicago) where we can meet, communicate, brainstorm, and become a greater community.
5. Help support the Ubuntu Community via bug squashing, technical support, marketing, and spreading Ubuntu.
6. Presenting the team to the Ubuntu Community Council, becoming a registered and Ubuntu acknowledged LoCo.

Right now I am trying to get all of this going. I have seen many of you express your support and interest in a Ubuntu Chicago Team, join the irc channel and lets start working together as one, making the team a hit.

Our plans are not to be another LUG in the Chicago land area. Our plan is to market Ubuntu throughout the Chicago land are. Each one of us will be a direct line of communication for the Ubuntu community. So please, come show your support and lets make Ubuntu Chicago a reality.

What Ubuntu Chicago Needs: For one, it needs each and everyone of you. We need a diverse community. Whether you use Ubuntu, Kubuntu, Xubuntu, Edubuntu, or any other Ubuntu distrobution, we need you. We need coders, networkers, tech savvy, non-tech savvy, marketers, entrepreneurs, men, women, and children. We need it all. Even if you just have an interest into Ubuntu, you are welcome.

Thank you everyone, as we look forward to seeing you online! Take care.

NOTE: Greenwom is currently tied up with scheduling and an opportunity of a life-time. Greenwom is still the founder/idealist with Ubuntu Chicago, however he will more then likely be afk for a little bit. He has expressed that he wants to be active, and just so you all know, he will always be active and always be the founder/idealist of the team. In the mean time, if you wish to communicate with the team, feel free to email me @ nixternal at gmail dot com. I will relay all messages as needed. Thanks again everyone.

Happy 4th of July Everyone!:D So when are we going to have our first meeting? Now that the summer holidays are out of the way...

nixternal
July 6th, 2006, 04:57 PM
Mr_HeNtAi, Happy 4th to you also. I hope everyone had a great 4th of July. I see we had another add themselves to the list, welcome aboard.

Meeting: We have a couple of options here, we could either perform an online meeting for brainstorming using jabber (conference rooms), skype (conference rooms), IRC #ubuntu-chicago, or even gobby (sudo apt-get install gobby). As for meeting somewhere, that could work also. We could pick a central location, as I am open to any location myself. We can set it up to where it is a couple weeks in advance to allow everyone to free up their schedules for it.

Everybody, voice up here, what are your feelings for a meeting? Want to meet at a location, or brainstorm electronically. I will leave that up to you guys, as I am wide open.

Thank you everyone. I am trying to get a mailing list up and going. I am probably going to create some subpages to the Ubuntu ChicagoTeam Wiki, that would allow us to use a page for MeetingAgendas, MeetingTimes, MeetingLocations, and so on. That way there we can brainstorm through the wiki a little bit.

Note: Another thing also, it would be nice if everyone could sign the Ubuntu Code of Conduct. In order to get this done you need to setup your GPG Key (https://wiki.ubuntu.com/GnuPrivacyGuardHowto). There are a couple of way to sign the Code of Conduct. One is join/create an account on the Launchpad (https://launchpad.net). The GPG Key link also tells you how to sign the Code of Conduct at the bottom of the page.

Thanks everyone again, and lets make Ubuntu Chicago the greatest Local Community Team possible!!!

Mr_HeNtAi
July 6th, 2006, 11:23 PM
I would perfer to meet in person, however I am up for most anything. I've been on and off of the IRC Channel nixternal has setup and he seems to be the only one in there whenever I am on. If its going to be electronically I say the IRC Channel is a great place to start.

nixternal
July 6th, 2006, 11:36 PM
It doesn't matter to me how we meet like I said, however a meeting is needed, and that way there we can see how to go from here. If any of you have a preferred meeting spot, lets hear about it. I can get anywhere I need to be in the Chicago land area and know a lot of it by the back of my hand.

Anytime in the evening is good, or even a Saturday or Sunday works for me. We can do sometime at the end of this month beginning of next month. My daughter is coming in here within in the next week or so, so that will have me tied up a bit. If you guys come up with a date or time you are available lets do this.

NOTE: If you guys come in the IRC channel, which I have seen a few of you do, you can ping me by typing my nick like this:

nixternal: ping!

that will get my attention, as I am usually at my computer, but in a different channel or working on something. Just saying something in channel will get noted, however saying my nick will definately get my attention.

Thanks everyone, and keep spreading Ubuntu!!!

Another Chicagoan here. Been using/spreading Ubuntu since 5.04.

I have been in Woodridge for a couple years - saw someone else post from there :) - but I'm moving to the city now.

I've been exposing a lot of people to Ubuntu. I've converted several, and have at least opened the eyes of some others.

I'd be up for a regular place to meet online, not sure if my schedule permits for meeting up in person.

nixternal
July 8th, 2006, 01:56 AM
How was everyone's holiday? Well, I have been working with the Ubuntu Community trying to get some things for the Chicago team implemented. The two big things are and Ubuntu-Chicago mailing list for communications, and Ubuntu approved hosting to display either a small home page or a forums page just for Ubuntu Chicago. I am leaning towards more of a forums as it will allow Chicago related communications to be carried out, yet we could have a simple front page aside from the wiki if needed. I think the wiki does a good job acting as a web page for the team, but having the UbuntuChicago Forums would be good. It would be nice to hear input on this.

It would be nice to hear a lot of input actually. I know a couple have communicated some very good information, ideas, suggestions, comments, and criticism.

I see a lot of posts about people interested in the team, yet I don't see the enthusiasm in meeting, either physically or electronically. I have created an IRC channel for an open line of uninterrupted communications, yet myself and a couple of others visit the channel. I understand if time permits and your schedules are full, I would just like to start seeing some feedback from everyone that is truelly interested.

Just so you guys know, I spend a lot of time working with the Ubuntu community. I currently participate with the Ubuntu Documentation team, Wiki team, Marketing team, Laptop team, Bug Squad, New Users Network, Developers, as well as Packaging and the MOTU. I am currently in the process of going for Kubuntu and Ubuntu team membership here within the next week. This broadens the available line of communications we can have with the community which can in turn make us a very strong marketing entity for the Ubuntu community.

I appreciate everyone who has been involved in the teams process, and for those of you who have communicated with me. Let's turn the enthusiasm we have showed into an achievement, and let's Spread Ubuntu!!! Thank you everyone!!! Take care, and until next time...

For those of you who are interested in doing the same, take a look at the GPG Howto (https://help.ubuntu.com/community/GnuPrivacyGuardHowto). This simple tutorial will show you how to generate a GPG key for you, and how to upload to the keyserver, as well as get and sign a copy of the Ubuntu Code of Conduct.

Planning for the meeting is underway, as many good suggestion have been brought up on IRC. We are currently working on a poster or 2 to display at the meeting. If you have ideas, or would like to give a brief speach/lecture on what you would like to see occur with Ubuntu and Ubuntu Chicago, feel free to set it up.

I am sure this first meeting will be a little bit of a meet-n-great, as well as some future planning, and maybe even some key-signing. So prepare to geek up and geek out, that is for sure.

Thanks again everyone. Until next time...

bravo-zulu to nixternal,
the progress is great... thanks for your effort.

I just got my PC back online... (my wireless was craped out on an upgrade)

I've fielded many emails from folks asking questions, I really think this team has the desire to do something. I working on clearing the calender for the meeting (I'm out of work on the 19th so it may be REAL clear if I don't find a decent job :)

Greenwom, awesome!!! I truelly hope you can make it, as this is your puppy!!! We have come together to make this possible in your absence, and it isn't all me at all. Just so you all understand, here is what made this team possible:

Greenwom - he had the initial idea, w/o him we would all still be going "it would be neat to have a Chicago team"
Mr_HeNtAi - if it wasn't for him pressing the meeting, there wouldn't be a scheduled meeting. He is also a huge provider behind the scenes.
BrienGreen - If I am not mistaken, him and jbalint brought up Buffalo Wild Wings. BrianGreen is doing a lot of behind the scenes work as well, keeping me inline is his biggest task right now.
Red_Herring - this is the hip youngster that wants to own all social groups in his school, don't worry, as we will make sure you are embarassed to the max in your home town ;)
All of you that have provided information to the forums, the wiki, and to my inbox. If it wasn't for all of you, the team wouldn't be possible.
All I have done is communicated really. Everyone else seems to have put in more input. I took the torch briefly to get this going while Greenwom was busy, the other guys got the ball rolling. Please, do not feel left out, as I would be interested in seeing a presentation from you either in here, my email, but I would really like to see it at the meeting. I will probably bring my craptop and give a brief intro the Ubuntu, Ubuntu Chicago, and the Ubuntu Community. I will do a brief slide show that will be open to the floor during it for questions. A Q&A session would be nice, as well as to get input from all of you.

Let's here what you have, what you can do, or what you are interested in. Make it to the meeting if possible, as I would enjoy meeting you all!!! Take care, and until next time...

Yea, I'm getting really excited about this meeting. I have lots of questions and answers to exchange. Is there an agenda underway? Meet up in the IRC Channel so you can add anything you wish to discuss!

Edited the ChicagoTeam Frontpage (https://wiki.ubuntu.com/ChicagoTeam). Also, by popular demand, I also adding a Meetings & Agenda (https://wiki.ubuntu.com/ChicagoTeam/Meetings) page. Feel free to put your interests on the agenda. Just so you know, you put it up there, I will call you to the floor to speak on behalf of your agenda :D If you would like to, go ahead and put something on the agenda that you want covered, and pass the information along just in case you can't make it. Just over 2 weeks left until our first meeting!!!

I've got a gpg key.
I think a keysigning party at the meeting on the 27th would be a great idea.
How do I officially sign the Ubuntu Code of Conduct?

Hey Max,

Check out the Gnu Privacy Guard Howto (https://help.ubuntu.com/community/GnuPrivacyGuardHowto). It tells you everything you need to know in order to sign the CoC. You can also join us on IRC as the guys there have all signed it, and can help you out. Hope that helps!!!

Random story.

I ran into some guy on the Metra this morning with a stack of Ubuntu cds and stickers, and I told him to check out the forums/meeting on the 27th.

He said he was in LUNI (Linux Users Northern Illinois)

Maybe we'll get another to join up?

Another thing we can push, and if any of you are interested:

The Classroom (https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Classroom) - a project put on by the Ubuntu NewUserNetwork (https://wiki.ubuntu.com/NewUserNetwork)

We will be providing lessons on a variety of topics on IRC starting in August. I will be teaching a few of those, and we are looking for more instructors. If you are interested in being an instructor, check out the wiki pages and also on IRC, #ubuntu-classroom.

I'm signed up for gpg.
I'll sit in on one of the first ones to see what the format is like.
I was a computer science TA for three semesters at my old university, so teaching is definately something I can help out on.

CHICAGO!!!

The Ubuntu Chicago Local Community Team (LoCo) has an official Ubuntu mailing list. This mailing list is a type of internet forum, but uses e-mail to allow for a widespread distribution of information to anyone SUBSCRIBED to the list. To read the information via email that is sent throughout the list, you must in fact Subscribe (https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-us-chicago). To send an email to the list you would send it to the ubuntu-us-chicago (ubuntu-us-chicago@lists.ubuntu.com) list. I encourange everyone that is interested in the Ubuntu Chicago team to join, and get involved. We would love to hear your ideas, your concerns, or even questions that you may have.

NOTE: If any of your have experience in moderating a mailing list, please let me know via the list, as I am sure I will need some help in the future!!!

Thanks everyone!!!

I can't tell you how excited I am to see a local team up and running!

I had some hardware failures on my primary server, which is why some who tried contacting me couldn't get through. I joined up with everyone in #ubuntu-chicago tonight. I've pointed ubuntuchicago.org/.com over to the official site, and I'm looking forward to helping out the team.

The first meeting was a success! Thank you to everyone who showed. We laid out some ground work to get started. Now all we have to do is get a strategy togeather and put it into action. As a goal this weekend I'm going to try and convert one of my family members over the Ubuntu. This will be my first "TOTAL" convert if I'm successful. We should start thinking about a 2nd meeting...any thoughts for a location?

Two of us from Bloomington are coming up for the October meeting, will be nice to meet some other people running Ubuntu. We have 10 systems at the museum we volunteer at running Edubuntu, I've got it on 2 systems here at home and finally got my laptop working with the wireless card. My friend has ubuntu on at least 2 systems at his house and we are starting to work with server as well. Needless to say I think we have the largest Ubuntu network in Bloomington lol.

Awesome! Can't wait to meet you guys. Just so you know, we have info at http://chi.ubuntu-us.org and we are usually online and kicking in the IRC channel on chat.us.freenode.net (Freenode IRC), in #ubuntu-chicago

We also have a mailing list at https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-us-chicago
Feel free to join the list and email the rest of the crew. I am starting to think that maybe Ubuntu Chicago may some day become Ubuntu Illinois, then Ubuntu Midwest and then Ubuntu World ;)

Thanks again for stopping by, hope to see you around. Take care!

Will be happy to meet up with some other Ubuntu users for a change. Seems now I'm just running across some issues with the ubuntu wiki lately. Seems I misspelled my wiki name, got another and now I'm having issues uploading the code of conduct since gpg want's to use the other email addy, easy fix for this anyone? Trying to get things set up so I can apply for membership, think I have it covered with advocacy if nothing else, I've converted 2 more people so far and just sent a disk home with my parents who had been here to visit this weekend.

What's a good IRC app to use? I haven't IRC since last century lol..where's the HowTo at lol. Got the one for GAIM but just clueless on how to get to the channel, ok I only messed with it for a bit though.

Sent a hello email to the list last week haven't seen it show up yet, going to give it another shot in tomorrow night if it doesn't come thru.

My only complaint about Ubuntu..my Ubuntu sticker kinda disintagrated and fell off the back window of my car last week, of course it lasted longer then the MS sticker...maybe because MS doesn't give them away with their cds.

Glad to be a part of the team if you ever decide to host a meeting a bit south of Chicago we have a great place to host it down here, and it costs as much as a Ubuntu cd as well. :)

for gpg at the command line do:

gpg --edit-key <your_key>

once you are int he edit section, do:

adduid

follow the instructions and add your new email address in there. now you will have two email addresses listed. you can opt to keep them both, or delete the other one.

as for an IRC client, that depends on if you use Ubuntu or Kubuntu. Kubuntu I would recommend Konversation. With Ubuntu, either use GAIM or X-Chat.

hope this helps, if you want more help or anything, i got by nixternal on every chat client you can think of ;)
