I am using Ubuntu 10.04 on my desktop and I want to upgrade to 10.10.

However when I open the upgrade manager and check for updates like the instructions in
http://www.ubuntu.com/desktop/get-ubuntu/upgrade

No message appears giving me the option for the upgrade.

Should I use dist-upgrade or should I wait for the GUI to work.

Cheers!!

If it was me doing it, i would do a clean install but that is my personal choice

The issue inst that the GUI is broken.... go to system > update manager > click setting > update tab > change from LTS > to normal release
Then 10.10 will pop up in update manager
I would test 10.10 first on a live CD to make sure it works!

most people upgrade work pretty well, but like anything new there are always the unknowns and untested hardware! look the testimonial part of the forum
if you wait a few week or months even more bugs will have been sorted, that is why I always test on a live CD first just to make sure it going to work
I do a clean install anyway, doesn't leave any cr** from previously release on there

No operating system is perfect and 10.10 is not an exception. You can find known bugs in launchpad: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/maverick or by scimming through this forum. It is all about how much you are willing to do if something goes wrong. The most secure way is obiviously to stick to the LTS versions like 10.04. I haven't updated yet.

I've never had any luck with upgrading, something ALWAYS bugs during the process. I would suggest doing a clean install each time you want to move to the newest release, just to minimize any problems in the long run.

hello all, I just upgraded to 10.10 from 10.04 lts on sunday. outside of the fact that it took a long time to finish, which doesnt really matter everything went really smooth. in fact it seems like 10.10 works much better. my mobile broadband modem always workswithout having to play with it, evolution finally works properly and it actually seems to work much faster than 10.04. so so far im happy i went with the upgrade.

There is this sticky from the top of the "general" forum.

You'll probably also want to read the release notes and notes on upgrading before you start.

There are lots of known issues with 10.10, but overall I am finding it to be much better than 10.04. I have had no major problems and, so far, I have been able to fix every small problem I have encountered.

I did the so-called "dirty install".
