Dells have a small FAT partition that the Boot Manager might have a problem with. I first tried a simple installation to work along with Windows XP. That led to a GRUB screen and an unhelpful command prompt. I tried another install to specify the boot partition and that was ignored entirely as XP booted up straight away.

Must I, as a N00b, battle with Grub2? I can see it is well documented, but it's still enough to put me off linux again.

I gave up with 10.04 as no way would it install, and instead got Mandriva to dual boot. I was pleased that 10.10 seemed to install. But why can't I get the Boot Manager to come up and let me choose the boot partition options? It did in Mandriva.
