I have a netbook. I just upgraded to 10.10, and now I have no wallpaper. The machine boots into a sort of launcher app (different from the one before) with a bunch of launch icons down the left hand side, and a menu bar at the top - however, the remainder of the screen real estate is just empty black nothingness. I tried right-clicking, in the expectation that I would be offered a choice of options including "change background wallpaper" or some such, but right-click did nothing. I think what I'd really, really, really like to do is get rid of the launcher app altogether, and have my actual real desktop back, and menus like "Applications", "Places" and "System" in the menubar, just like on my Ubuntu 10.9 desktop machine. So please can someone tell me (a) how to get rid of the new launcher, or failing that (b) how to change the wallpaper of the new launcher. Thanks

log out & select gnome in the session menu

you can set a background from appearance, the icon above the trash can shows applications.
