Problem on startup

I have just upgraded from Ubuntu 9.04 to 9.10 and now everytime I start up it wants to do a disk check. It says to press 'esc' to ignore but it dosen't always carry on to finish startup. Is there some way that I can stop this from happening?
Another thing is I get icon on the desktop called 'VMC Lite 9.3.09' .This is of no use to me and I wish to get rid of it . Can that be done?

The first problem has been fixed but Icon VMC LITE 9.3.0.9 still appears and it is a .exe . Is this not a MS file. The thing is I wish to get rid of it but am not sure how to go about it. Some advice would be appreciated .
