Speeds are assigned at the central office of your ISP, so it has nothing to do with your OS.

(Max) network speed is indeed defined by your ISP, but your computer hardware does play a role in how it is capable to handle the traffic that it needs to receive or sent. And as such, your OS can play a significant part in speed tests. ;-)

If the difference is so great, I would be running AV, bot & malware checkers for the next 10 hours.

Do you have an antivirus running, torrent client or automatic updates? Is your network configuration on Windows done badly? If so, that's probably why.

You might have to do some TCP/IP configurations to Windows then, and just remember that Windows has the 20% Quality of Service stuff. ;)

I get the same network speeds on both Windows and Ubuntu, even on fresh installs.

Correct me if I'm wrong. Could Firewall be the culprit? In windows It's enabled by default.

Ubuntu has all ports closed by default I am unsure if that is the same thing or not.

What you're being told is right: Ubuntu isn't faster, your Windows is mis-configured.

What you're being told is right: Ubuntu isn't faster, your Windows is mis-configured.

hahahaaha, mis-configured is the usual excuse. If Windows configures itself that way, then it is slower, so the OS and it's network stack have a lot to do with network speed.

So does Linux via iptables. If that is set-up wrong, it's going to affect your network performance. It's worth noting that the 2.6.35 kernel has network enhancements.

Something AWFULLY wrong with your Windows setup, or maybe you are experiencing some weird speed bump which may be gone before you check again. ;)
Net Speed has nothing to do with Ubuntu, in reality.
Ubuntu 10.10 boots and shuts down faster than Windows 7 though. :)

Have to agree with most replies above. I have nine machines in this room. One runs XP, three run Win7 and the others run various Ubuntu versions. No network speed differences at all. I've never noticed any difference in all the years I've been doing this (long time). My ISP gives me what they advertise, plus a little bit extra - 1.7 MB/S (they advertise 1.5).

Check your network cable on the Win7 box. Swap it with the Ubuntu box and see if anything changes.

EDIT: Just fired up the Win7 box and did speedtest on both Ubuntu and Win7. No difference - the Win7 box got a teeny tiny bit faster score, but not enough to mean anything.

I've got a Windows 7 desktop for gaming. There is not massive speed difference between it and my lappy.

Your drivers could also be the cause. Firewall can be disabled even though it is on by default. There is a difference between ports closed and a firewall, all ports closed means nothing is accepting connections on them. A firewall inspects communications and determines if they should be allowed to pass.

There is one speed difference that I've personally observed ... in Win7, Firefox consistently scores 10% faster than IE. So, if the Speed Test was conducted using IE, that would PROBABLY be slower than using Firefox.

However, I just tried the Speed Test on a multi-boot machine running Win7 and Ubuntu, and there was no noticeable difference in the scores -- when using FF on both.

It is absolutely impossible that Ubuntu is the root cause for your altering network speed.

What might be the cause is like already stated a driver problem. As long as you haven't touched the network config on Windows there won't be any difference.

Not going to comment on the net speed factor, that has been covered pretty extensively.

That said, the boot time disparity is incredible. With 10.10, my laptop (1.33 GHz, 2 GB RAM) is off and running while my desktop (1.80 GHz quadcore, 4 GB RAM) is still spinning the Windows 7 splash screen.

That's impressive enough for me. :)

I think if we were talking about a wireless connection it "could" make sense.

In that case I think it has nothing to do with the OS.

I can equal signal strength on both Windows 7 and Ubuntu from the same distance to my router which is about 40 feet.

I also get the same signal strength on both OS picking up my neighbors wireless across the street like 200 feet away.

First of all "smart guy" Cablevision is Optimum Online and as always (at least with Cablevision) you get what you pay for . . . Optimum Online's standard internet offerings start at only $30 per month and give you a max of 2 up / 15 down

I am currently paying for Optimum Online Boost with gives you a max of 5 up / 30 download for an additional $15 per month (only $10 per month if you use triple play)

Optimum Online Ultra How ever delivery's a mind blowing 101 Mbps downstream and up to 15 Mbps upstream! But it will cost you an additional $100 bucks a month . . .

http://www.crunchgear.com/2009/05/19/really-fast-internet-first-impressions-of-optimum-online-ultra/

My comment about Verizon vs Cable was not to brag but to simply express that Cable is much faster for the same price . . .

Actually I noticed a fairly big jump in Internet / ping etc speeds when switching from Windows to Linux. My tests concluded that my Windows based security software was causing some of the slow down, the rest was just due to Windows and potentially any background services that were using the connection.

YMMV, but my switch really did increase my Internet speed.
