Ok, I've been struggling with this for a while, and I can't find a solution via Google or this forum, so, maybe I'm alone in this and someone can help me out.

My 5.1 sound sounded distorted in movies, tv-shows and music (basically always). After searching for a solution, I found this weird thing:

I run Alsamixer and all channels are "up in the red", except the master, so I turned them down, which made it sound better, however, when I use the volume-slider on the status bar in the top-right, or the volume-keys on my keyboard, all the channels go out of whack again, especially the PCM, which makes the distortion sounds, and they tend to always max out, or level all the way down.
Also, when I mute any speakers, they all get muted.

I tried re-installing the sound packs (as described in the sticky thread in this forum), but that didn't do anything.

I'm a newbie with Ubuntu, and I'd like to use it as a media-pc to replace my Vista, but this is the only thing that's not "perfect" yet..

Any help (in Bob the Builder-language) is much appreciated!

Oh, my specs:
Card: HDA NVidia
Chip: Realtek ALC888
