Just installed Ubuntu 10.10 on my daughter's machine and I can't get the system to recognize her Netgear USB wireless NIC.

The NIC was plug-n-play on Karmic.

Here is the log for dmesg;

I managed to get it working via NDIS Wrapper,(which was very simple) but I am having a problem I have never seen before. NIC is seeing some other networks, but for some reason it doesn't see my own network. My other PCs have no problem seeing and connecting to the router. I have checked all of the settings on the router and they all are in proper order.

I am thinking that the problem may have to do with the driver version I used for NDIS. I used WG111v2 as I can't find the needed .inf file for the WG111v3. If this is the cause of the issue, then why would I be able to see my neighbor's router, but not my own, unless they are running different firmware on their router.

Please keep in mind that this problem did not exist with Karmic, as mentioned in the original post.

Thanx,
uRock

It appears that I need the WG111v3 driver. If anyone has a copy of the WG111v3.inf file, please zip it and attach it.

Or if anyone knows where I can download it, then please share the link.

Thanks for any and all help,
uRock

Ok, now that you have the file, you should change your signature.

Try installing "linux-firmware-nonfree" from Synaptic. It solved my problems with WG511 from Netgear. I think it used to be part of the iso, but has been left out recently.

Since I'm new to Ubuntu and have the same problem, can you tell me where to find the file for linux-fimrware-nonfree?

Thanks!

Ubuntu Software Center, Synaptic Package Manager or run sudo apt-get install linux-firmware-nonfree in a terminal.

Hello Gurus,

Please help me, I follow your advice an downloaded linux-firmware-nonfree, the installation was successful. Then what?, I still can't have my WG111 working.

What else do I need to configure?

Thanks

Did you restart and unplug the Ethernet cable?
