upgrade with usb

I was made bootable usb with Maverick netbook ubuntu and I would like to upgrade from Lucid netbook.

Any suggestions?

Not sure how to upgrade using bootable USB.
You can copy your home folder to a separate partition and then do a fresh install without loosing much.
