Update Manager Freezes

I was doing updates on my 10.10 system and after I entered the admin password update manager just froze. After 20min I quit the application and now it wont let me update through synaptic or by sudo apt-get install -f. It says another process is using it

synaptic said packages were broken and suggested
sudo dpkg --configure -a
and it seems to have worked
