I put this on 2 different flash drives and when I boot to it and click on "Try" it hangs and crashes.

I used the usb installer on the ubuntu download page.

Let's hear some specifications for the machine, especially how much memory it has.

Agree with what mörgæs said above, but there also seem to be issues with 10.10 and USB installs (just by the number of posts about this same problem).

Try burning to a CD and then giving it another shot.

Have you checked the MD5SUM of the downloaded iso?

It's Ubuntu 10.10 and 10.04.1 ran fine on it. It's a machine at school I forget the specs if I had to guess I would say 4GB RAM with Intel Core i5. It's a computer lab in which every system has Ubuntu 10.4 installed on it. So I am guessing there is a problem with USB installs currently? :\

And I'm a noob how do you "Have you checked the MD5SUM of the downloaded iso?" ?

Also note I used the same .iso to install 2 virtual machines with Virtual Box and they work just fine.

Judging by the sheer number of posts, there appears to be a problem with USB installs at the moment for 10.10

Check MD5SUM:
