I can't install either of them.

Some packages could not be installed. This may mean that you have
requested an impossible situation or if you are using the unstable
distribution that some required packages have not yet been created
or been moved out of Incoming.
Since you only requested a single operation it is extremely likely that
the package is simply not installable and a bug report against
that package should be filed.
The following information may help to resolve the situation:
The following packages have unmet dependencies:
bluefish: Depends: libpcre3 (>= 4.5) but it is not installable
E: Broken packages

Is there an easy way to figure out what is where? In portage I could do an emerge -s foo and 99.9% of the time it would find foo.

Add these to your sources.list
deb http://backports.ubuntuforums.org/backports warty-backports main universe multiverse restricted
deb http://backports.ubuntuforums.org/backports warty-extras main universe multiverse restricted
It replace deb http://ubuntu-bp.sourceforge.net/ubuntu/ warty-backports main universe you can get rid of that one.

I addded those 2 repositories and took out the 'bp' one. Tried to emerge Bluefish and got the identical error. Same with gftp. :(

xmms fails as well...

Package xmms is not available, but is referred to by another package.
This may mean that the package is missing, has been obsoleted, or
is only available from another source

Did you update the list before trying installing?
Everything works good for me don't know what your problem might be, try using Synaptic see if makes a difference.

As Yukonjack suggested, you probably need to update first. Whenever you change your repository list (or whenever you think the repositories themselves might have new packages), you should either run
sudo apt-get update or run Synaptic and hit the Reload button.
