I'm visiting my brother-in-law who has Time-Warner Cable and his computer accesses the internet fine with it. He has no wireless. When I try to use my computers, 2 laptops and a netbook, by taking the cable from his computer and plugging it into one of mine, it appears to see the network but doesn't connect to it. Windows doesn't even see it. I've tried it on all 3 of the computers I brought. I'm trying to figure this out. I use these computers at home at at several friends and neighbors with no problems but it seems they all have DSL. Is cable something different that its not working?

Some modems "lock onto" a MAC address. You might reset the modem... but you'd need to do that for each machine.

Thanks. I thought it was something like that although I had never experienced it. I should have brought my router but I guess I would have trouble there too.
