I just upgraded from 10.04 to 10.10 and now after I choose "ubuntu, with linux 2.6.35-22-generic" from boot menu, it asks me to login. Then it says welcome to ubuntu and " chris@chris-desktop:`$ " comes up. what do I have to do to get to my normal desktop. I just formatted hard drive and reinstalled 10.04 on formatted hd yesterday. I then installed updates, and waited until today to install 10.10. I only have linux on this computer.

it does a bunch of stuff and goes back to where it was. The last thing it says is " No such process (errno 3): server error "

It is a recent install without any customization or settings involved. So, is it possible that you download 10.10 and install it directly, instead of upgrading 10.04?

Your issue can surely be fixed but it will be easier to do a fresh install with Maverick.

Which graphics card have you got? Did you install the proprietary drivers for your card under Lucid before upgrading?

I tried startx command again and tried to read what it said while all the words were going down the screen. I saw something about no drivers and nvidia. I did update drivers to nvidia before doing upgrade.

Try booting in the recovery mode. It will be the 2nd option in Grub menu. You'll see something like "Fix X". Try it and proceed with normal boot. Does that help?

I restarted and went into recovery. I started in failsafe graphic mode and it started. I go to nnvidia settings and it says I'm not using nvidia x driver. it says to edit x config file.

Edit the xorg.conf file by

sudo gedit /etc/X11/xorg.conf

Section "Device" should look something like this.

Section "Device"
Identifier "Default Device"
Driver "nvidia"
Option "NoLogo" "True"

xorg.conf screen pops up. it is blank.

Are you sure you type capital 'X' instead of lower case 'x' in

sudo gedit /etc/X11/xorg.conf

I found another driver searching the forum(nvidia 173). I downloaded and installed. still no different except now it matches what you said it should say at end:

I have to run for now, I'll be back on later tonight to hopefully get this resolved. Thanks for the help.

your problem might goes away if you remove this weird outdated xorg.conf, now X is drived by the kernel

sudo rm -f /X11/xorg.conf

Update, I removed nvdia drivers and now computer starts normal. I reactivated driver I was using and restarted. It still started ok but, graphics are horrible. It shows the nvidia driver as active but not in use. How do I get it to use the driver?

Here is my problem:

ABI change in xorg 1.9 breaks legacy nvidia-96 and nvidia-173 drivers in Maverick
Ubuntu “xorg-server” package Bugs Bug #626974

It appears others with the same video card as myself that use the same drivers are having the same issue. Hopefully it gets resolved soon. It is at least useable now.
