is it illegal to hack my router? one of my friend's friends older brothers said that he hacked into his home router and changed all the traffic going through to display web pages upside down as a practical joke. if its not illegal, can someone say how to get to the router software? thx

It is up to the license of the company you purchased from and the laws of your country if you can (misuse?) the device. On the whole I think yes though. As for hacking traffic to flip images, yes you can:

That depends. Is it illegal to paint your walls in your jurisdiction? :)

There are Linux distros available for routers. Here (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tomato_%28firmware%29) is one example.

And not to mention that screwing up everyone else's computer is the kind of thing that only creeps do.

This is about propierty. I remember an ISP that explicitly stated the router was licensed and was their propierty, not my family's; it featured a big sticker citing all possible laws and contractual stipulations... Not sure whether they were applicable or not, but they claimed that.

Check your contract and avoid having a nasty issue with your ISP.

Another possibility is that you buy a new router and play with that one. That router will be of your propierty and the worse you can do when modifying it is to void your warranty period.
