Is this happening after the Ubuntu download or is the Wubi installer failing to start ?

Read the Release Notes on 10.10. They clearly indicate installation problems with Wubi.

You can find them by going to distrowatch.com, looking in the center section for the Ubuntu 10.10 announcement, and clicking on the Release Notes link.

I tried 5 times to install Ubuntu 10.10 and 10.04 32 bit and 64 bit using wubi on the same drive, not C:, and they all failed. So finally I tried to install it on drive C: and it worked. Apparently, there are some drives/partitions wubi simply can't stand/tolerate.

Oops. I just examined the drive and it is screwed up. It is a 800 GB drive but windows reports that it is a 3+ terrabyte. Problem solved.
