View Full Version : [SOLVED] Dual boot trouble

Aloha,

I just installed Mythbuntu on my machine. I had Windows XP running, and then installed a separate hard drive where I then installed Mythbuntu. Mythbuntu boots perfectly fine, and I can see my XP installation in the Grub 2 menu, but when I try to load my XP partition, I get a "No such Device <UUID>" "No such partition" error. I've been reading forums all night, but can't seem to fix the problem. Can somebody give me a little help?

Thanks in advance for your help!

I ran the boot_info script, and here are the results:

Boot Info Script 0.55 dated February 15th, 2010

No promises, but try adding the following line to /etc/default/grub file:

GRUB_PRELOAD_MODULES="part_msdos"

Then type "sudo update-grub" to implement your changes.

srs5694,

You are AWESOME! That is exactly what I needed! I searched for 2 days and couldn't find an answer. THANK YOU!!!

For anybody who may come across this later, I've done a little research since srs5694 gave me the magic line of code, and came across this post: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1561035. Apparently for drives >= 2TB, they use GPT instead of MBR, and grub 2 has a problem with a mixture of MBR and GPT. This command preloads the MSDOS partition table and allows the system to boot properly.

GPT (GUID Partition Table:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/GUID_Partition_Table
Unix/Linux Disk Partitioning:
http://content.hccfl.edu/pollock/aunix1/partitioning.htm
Grub2 Modules:
http://grub.enbug.org/CoreBoot

Now I will try to figure out how to mark this post as solved :)
