View Full Version : I Thought 32-bit could only see/use 4-4.5 GB/Ram?

I just bought a new laptop with 6 GB ram. I did a fresh install of Lucid, and it only saw 3.9, which is what I expected. I had to start over with my custom Remix which is for sure 32-bit because my desktop only has a 32-bit processor (which is where this Remix came from). Why does it now see 5.8 GB/Ram? I'm currently using 4.8 GB. *shrugs*

I have read somewhere either here or outside this website that in case you have 4GB RAM and above, you could use 64-bit OS instead of 32-bit. I need to do some search to see if that's possible while you have 32-bit CPU.

I think this might help?

I have a 64-bit i7.

Microsoft Windows 7 Home Premium Edition 64-bit operating system preinstalled

BTW I tried installing a 64-bit version of Ubuntu, and it says that my processor doesn't support it. *double shrug*

Physical Address Extension. I think that when 32Bit finds enough RAM, it enables PAE so that the full can is visible to the system

The 32bit version of Ubuntu will use the PAE kernel if it detects >= 4GB of RAM.

So why did one version of Lucid see 3.9 and the other see 5.8 on the same computer? Similarly, why did the 64-bit version not recognize my 64-bit processor?

One installed PAE, one didn't.
Don't know about your other question because I'm still confused about which machine has which processor and which version was installed where...

If you've got a 32-bit only CPU, then 64-bit wont work. At all. Ever. :)

I really don't know :(
I haven't sleep much for the last week (3 hours a day) so I can't function.

I'll have some sleep and search more about that.

Anyway, I've never worked or had 64-bit CPU/OS. I don't need it for now.
