Ubuntu 8.10 installed,On booting it takes user name & password then stops

Hi,
I have finished installing Ubuntu 8.10.
System boots in ubuntu 8.10 then after asks for username & password. Then after Blank cream color screen comes with the curser. On moving the curser it moves.
it hangs on this . please suggest the remedy.

Any specific reason for using 8.10? WHy don't you install 10.04.1 which is an LTS or 10.10 RC, the latest release, stable coming out on 10/10/10?

If you want to stick with 8.10, how did you install it? From CD or USB? Was the MD5SUM of the downloaded image correct?

Hardware specs? Also, 8.10 is no longer supported, so as sikander3786 said, you should consider installing the latest version (10.04).

thanks for the suggestion & installed the ubuntu 10.4. Its working well.
