Even though the theme is still set to Ambiance, every time I login both the bottom and top panels, as well as the "skins" for all my programs, revert to an ugly pain gray Windows 95 look. How I I fix this? I am running Ubuntu 10.10 by the way.

Bumping this up- still having issue.

Here's a screenshot (http://img299.imageshack.us/img299/948/screenshotfd.png)

I'm trying to just run on the default Ambiance theme but the "skins" (i.e NOT the borders) in every application are ugly-as-sin Windows 95 mode.

You may notice that I am using gnome-panel, but this problem existed/persisted in regular gnome as well.

Doing a gconf-editor and /apps/metacity/general, the theme says Ambiance, but I note that "The theme determines the appearance of window borders, titlebar, and so forth." Is there somewhere else I need to look?

Bumping this as I'm suddenly getting this problem too. If I log out and back in again it's usually OK, but I can't figure out why my theme would change it's settings in this way. As per the OP, my appearance settings show I'm using Ambiance, but the theme itself looks like the default Gnome theme.

Anyone else with this issue?

Many thanks for that. Looks like exactly the same issue everyone else is having. As reported, when I click Appearance settings the theme begins to change to my choice, but until then I have the default Gnome theme. Hope they fix it soon. Bet it's something daft. :D
