Objective:

I want to incorporate changes and settings saved in persistence file to the live usb, to make the changes permanent, even if I decide to wipe the persistence file.

I wonder if its just a case of mounting the casper-rw file in another system and copying the contents to the usb root, overwriting as necessary.

Background:

I have an old sony vaio laptop whose HD died a while back, replacing it is ludicrously expensive, and carrying around an external HD defeats the purpose of its ultra portability. So I installed live usb on a memory stick and just left it in there (the laptop can't boot from usb so I use the Live Usb Boot CD to get it going).

Reason:

I figure that saving changes to the persitence casper-rw file results in a lot of duplicate files with minor differences, which wastes space. I only have a 1GB mem stick so space is at a premium, and I don't want to buy a bigger one cos sony mem sticks are expensive and the laptops age and limitations don't warrant any extra investment.

It strikes me that customizing the live usb would be a good idea so I've been reading https://help.ubuntu.com/community/LiveCDCustomization, it looks do-able even for me.

I've also been looking into https://help.ubuntu.com/community/LiveCDCustomizationFromScratch
so as to make the best use of space possible, but looks rather daunting for an absolute newbie like me.

Comments of any kind welcome.

PS. laptop is Sony Vaio PCG-TR5GP. Using Ubuntu 9.04 Jaunty cos the new ones have some issue with the laptop's integrated intel graphics.
