I have Ubuntu 10.04 in a standard installation. I use Khmer Unicode frequently on my computer. I recently got the Khmer Unicode to work correctly via the first post on this page (http://code.google.com/p/ibus/issues/detail?id=656), among other pages. So, these missing vowels render correcty. There is now one more problem with the rendering of characters on Ubuntu. I have developed Khmer Unicode fonts, so I am aware that the instructions for substitutions are in the open layout tables in the fonts. However, in gedit these instructions are not followed for a specific case in Khmer. I know for a fact that the fonts I am using are done correctly. There is not a problem in OpenOffice--only in gedit, from what I have seen so far. I would post images, but I don't think it would help anyone except those that read Khmer. So, the question is why would OpenOffice render the fonts correctly, according to the font layout tables, and gedit wouldn't? Is there any way to debug this problem to see if there is a fundamental problem with rendering Khmer on Ubuntu? If more detailed information is needed, I would be happy to post it.

I upgraded to Maverick and the problem remains. This is no surprise since the bug report found here (https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/scim/+bug/200844) is still unassigned and unfixed. It has been fixed in openSUSE and there is no reason it should not be fixed in Ubuntu and released in an update. I am not familiar enough with the bug-fixing process in the community to facilitate this fix. I am keeping this thread alive in hopes that someone who is familiar with it will make the necessary contacts to fix this problem.
