OSD notifications on full-screen

From what I understand about OSD notifications, anytime an application goes into full-screen mode, "normal" notifications are turned off. I run several VM's all day in full-screen on different workspaces; the problem then becomes that I no longer receive notifications.

Is there any way to either force these notifications to display (possibly making all notifications "critical")? Alternatively, what other options are available?

I'm running Ubuntu 10.04 x64...

I second that.

VirtualBox blocks ubuntu notifications on 10.10. Need a way configure notifications to be shown anyway.
