Very curious to know if you upgrade to the newer gnome 2.30 will you lose any of your existing programs installed. I have virtual box as well as Thunderbird mail client which has all my saved mail drafts. Will I retain this info?

Thunderbird is totally independent of gnome.
How do you propose to move to 2.30?
What version of Ubuntu are you using?

The easiest way to get Gnome 2.30 in Ubuntu is to use the current stable release, 10.04 Lucid Lynx.
