Is it possible to have distro a installed and then install distro b without using it's grub menu? I use Mint as my primary and want to install Ubuntu along side it without letting ubuntu use it's grub menu.

Yes, Use the advanced button and choose not to install. Maverick has changed the button to a combo box, not sure if it has no install as choice but just install to partition. If you do happen to install it just reinstall Mint's version.
