I wouldn't really consider Dune to be a 'space movie' or a hard sci-fi movie. It's more about politics, religion, environmentalism, drug addiction, and it just happens to be set in a sci-fi universe.

In fact, there are 2 movies (Razor and The Plan), but I don't think they would make much sense without watching the series.

Best series ever btw.

@ the OP, drop Star Wars episode I, II & III, add the first Alien movie, I hope you mean the original Planet of the Apes as the remake stunk, there's no c in Star Trek :^) and make sure they're Wrath of Khan and the latest Star Trek (2009), Close Encounters hasn't been mentioned yet (set on Earth but just a great movie), Blade Runner (director's cut) is a must see, no one said The Matrix. For some vintage goodness, see Godzilla vs. Monster Zero (1965).

I'm sincerely hoping that Tron: Legacy won't be a let down.

As far as I remember Tron, Blade Runner and The Matrix are not in space. They have some sort of "spaceships" but the sets are entirely on Earth.

I like Planet of the Apes (original) and there are some good suggestions in previous posts, but really 2 pages and no-one mentioned Space Balls? OK so I'm a bit unbalanced but I like it!

Correct. You also forgot to mention Planet of the Apes, also set on Earth. But the OP said space related, and certainly the dystopias of Blade Runner, Matrix and Apes are foreign enough that they could be other planets. I almost mentioned The Abyss as the deep sea is as foreign as deep space.

Really, the OP should clarify what he means by space related. Does Apollo 13 belong in the same space related category as Star Wars? I'd say no, but that Fantastic Voyage (1966) is a lot closer.

Eh, I don't like SGU that much. Too realistic if you know what I mean... I don't see it lasting past season 3. I am hoping for a turnaround though, they've got a solid premise and a loyal fan base to work with.
Haven't gotten into BG that much, saw a couple of the first series shows and they seemed alright. Completely agree about TNG and contact and I never saw heroes.

Close encounter of the third kind. Not exactly space but a visitor from outer space. This one is I believe is a classic. E.T., an alien who fall from outer space and want to go home but more for children actually.

Dark City, I have seen this posted anywhere yet, but without giving too much away I *highly* recommend this one.

Also like many have said, 2001: A Space Odyssey, Alien, Moon, rank pretty high up there. Also, though not entirely Sci-Fi, The Fountain directed by Darren Aronofsky takes place in space in one (large) aspect of the film.

The Babylon 5 movies, although made for television and not cinema.

I agree Pitch black is better than Riddick. The scene in which they drive off on the buggy while the eclipse is starting and the huge gas giant and its rings are setting in the background - one of the most amazing scenes ever captured on screen.

Could you make a scrot pic of it, that moment? Well, I prefer a bit riddick (second part) than first one. However there is not third movie (real movie) :(
In the first , I never understood why he said 'not to me'; he was in love with the blonde girl?

+1 for Apollo 13 (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0112384/) and The Dish (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0205873/) mentioned earlier in the thread, both inspired by true stories.

Astute viewers might notice Clint Howard (director Ron Howard's brother) in Apollo 13, who appeared as Balok in the ST:TOS episode "The corbomite maneuver". They might also notice Ron & Clint's parents in this movie too, along with a cameo by the real Jim Lovell.

Another piece of trivia: my sister-in-law has met the person played by Sam Neil (The Dish) in the movie Evil Angels (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0094924/)(a.k.a A cry in the dark), also inspired by a true story.

I don't remember the context of that line, but I think "in love' is too much. Nevertheless, he had a soft spot and cared for her.
