when i run "sudo startx" i get the message:
"(= Log file: "/var/log/Xorg.0.log", Time: Sat Oct 2 15:33:49 2010

giving up.
xinit: Connection reset by peer (errno 104): unable to connect to X server

Well, for a start, you shouldn't be running it with sudo.
Could you post the contents of /etc/X11/xorg.conf in
tags please.

if i startx without sudo it gives me :
"xauth: error in locking authority file /home/admin/.Xauthority
xauth: error in locking authority file /home/admin/.Xauthority
xauth: error in locking authority file /home/admin/.Xauthority
xauth: error in locking authority file /home/admin/.Xauthority
X: user not authorized to run the X server, aborting.
xinit: Server error.
xauth: error in locking authority file /home/admin/.Xauthority
Couldnt get a file descriptor referring to the console"
So the content of the /etc/X11/xorg.conf is:
# xorg.conf (X.Org X Window System server configuration file)
#
# This file was generated by dexconf, the Debian X Configuration tool, using
# values from the debconf database.
#
# Edit this file with caution, and see the xorg.conf manual page.
# (Type "man xorg.conf" at the shell prompt.)
#
# This file is automatically updated on xserver-xorg package upgrades *only*
# if it has not been modified since the last upgrade of the xserver-xorg
# package.
#
# If you have edited this file but would like it to be automatically updated
# again, run the following command:
# sudo dpkg-reconfigure -phigh xserver-xorg

1) Try opening a terminal and running
sudo dpkg-reconfigure x11-common Make sure that you set it so that anyone can run Xserver (if asked).
2) What is the current state of permissions on your .Xauthority file? Run
ls -l ~/.Xauthority to find out. Also, what is the output of:
w
3) Your monitor information in xorg.conf seems a little bare. Mine has
Section "Monitor"
Identifier "Monitor0"
VendorName "Unknown"
ModelName "Unknown"
HorizSync 28.0 - 33.0
VertRefresh 43.0 - 72.0
Option "DPMS"
EndSection
Though I don't know how much of this is necessary, and I'm sure it's monitor specific (so don't copy mine). Someone else will hopefully be able to make some suggestions regarding it.

Now I think that the problem is just xorg.conf. Try running
sudo dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg and see if that helps you create a usable config.

few check:
- are you using only genuine Hardy repo ?
(sudo nano /etc/apt/sources.list)
**** comment with # all the other lines if any *****
- clean the system:
sudo apt-get clean
sudo apt-get autoclean
sudo apt-get autoremove
- check installation:
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install -f
*** about .xauthority and other files into /home stating with ".", if you delete them they are automaticaly recreated when rebooting, so dont worry. ( this can often resolve issue)
