Is there any way to auto-refresh gnome desktop so that every time there's a new file on it, it appears clearly without pressing Ctrl+R?

Under other on the main menu check the box thats says window manager , this will then show up on your menu under other . This refreshes the desk top when selected , then you can drag this to the panel . you will have to add an icon of your choice by right clicking the new launcher and going to properties

select the the launcher picture on the left side of the the dialog box and browse to the folder where you have stored the icon of your choice and select open . Now you have a custom refresh launcher . There are plenty of icons on the net , so I'm you can find one you like . Move the icon to the file of your choice until you are ready to add it to the launcher.
