My brother lives in a remote area of Arizona and I live in Pennsylvania. He doesn't access to any form of broad band Internet service and has been using Windows with his winmodem. Because of malware, he would like to either dual boot Windows with Ubuntu or use Wubi. I got him a US Robotics serial modem on ebay which I'm planning to set up for him when I visit in November. I would like to check the modem out but I don't have dial-up service. I installed Gnome PPP and I can get a dial tone and a carrier signal when I attempt to contact my ISP, but I'm kicked off as soon as it realizes that I don't have a dial-up account. Does anyone know of a free service I can use just to check to make sure that the modem is functioning? I tried Net Zero and Juno but they use proprietary software for their connections and they stopped supporting Linux some time ago. I figure that getting the modem to dial and getting a carrier signal should be enough but I wont be satisfied until I see something on my own screen.
I also heard that Wubi doesn't always play nice with serial modems. Any truth to that rumor?
